One of the last films of the Italian neo-realist movement, and for many people it was one of the very best examples of this golden age of filmmaking (and for some it's even considered to be the greatest film ever made). Shot on location in the post-war period, it follows the journey of an elderly pensioner, without money or friends. The rest of his country is building itself up again and entering a new economic boom, but he is discarded like yesterday's trash. Alone, except for his dog, he struggles to survive loneliness and disillusionment.

Full of compassion, and with a bittersweet edge, this film is, as one critic said,  "one of the most heartbreaking stories ever filmed and an essential classic of world cinema."

Directed by the legendary Vittorio De Sica (The Bicycle Thief) this is a film about a heartless modernization which still reigns in our society today. The lead role is played by Carlo Battisti, a non-professional actor, which brings more sincerity to the role than any movie star could ever dream of.

"If this timeless classic doesn't make you smile and cry, you'd better check for a pulse."
