Shot on location in the post-war period, it follows the journey of an elderly pensioner, without money or friends. The rest of his country is building itself up again and entering a new economic boom, but he is discarded like yesterday's trash. Alone, except for his dog, he struggles to survive loneliness and disillusionment.
Full of compassion, and with a bittersweet edge, this film is, as one critic said, "one of the most heartbreaking stories ever filmed and an essential classic of world cinema."
