Before the notorious Hays "moral" censorship Code was enforced in Hollywood in 1933, American films actually were sexually-charged, daring, intelligent, liberal, female-empowering and even downright criminal. That was the case with this hilariously subversive flick by German director Ernst Lubitsch that slipped through the doors of censorship before they slammed shut in "the land of the free".
