The Exterminating Angel
14 april 20:00 - 00:00
After an amazing first Pinto Movie Night we're delighted to announce a new edition with Jeffrey Babcock.
For the upcoming evening we will move away from French village life, focusing instead on the Mexican bourgeoisie, though nationality here is irrelevant: Buñuel’s contempt for the rich was indiscriminate of nationality, and it has never been more obvious than in The Exterminating Angel (1962), starring Silvia Pinal and Enrique Rambal. It takes place in a similar scenario as his 1972 film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie; a lavish dinner party that escalates into a bizarre show of beastliness.
After dinner, the guests find themselves unable to leave due to some kind of mysterious force. Despite the outside world’s attempts to free them, the guests are stuck for days and see their living conditions reduced to the primitive. Unable to uphold their façade, they slowly deteriorate into the barbaric forms hidden behind their masks.
Considered by many to be his greatest surrealist film after L’age D’or, this film allows its character to roam free in a maze of dreams and sometimes nightmares.
Introductie door Jeffrey Babcock in het Engels.
Film gesproken in het Spaans, ondertiteling in het Engels.
