Solo. Solo solo that is. Brings a strange dialogue for the improviser.

I once asked Misha Mengelberg about it. "How can I play solo and improvise? If there is no one else to bring the necessary unpredictability that I need to improvise, I can remember and plan everything."

Misha answered "Memory? Me?" A very unsatisfying answer.

I still don't know how to improvise solo.

MICHAEL FOSTER sax
REONA dance

Michael Foster is a NYC-born & based saxophonist & organizer whose work focuses on the overlap between queer identities, intimacy, & improvisation. As a saxophonist, his approach draws equal influence from the jazz tradition and harsh noise, combining a broad sound with extensive instrumental preparations (such as amplification, balloons, motors, and more) to create a visceral timbral palette. His current projects as a leader include The Ghost, Michael Foster with Strings, & The New York Review of Cocksucking (duo with Richard Kamerman). He often works with Leila Bordreuil, Sarah Hennies, William Parker, Brandon Lopez, Luke Stewart, Nate Wooley, John Blum, Lydia Lunch, Steve Swell, Michael Griener, claire rousay, Jacob Wick, Ben Bennett, and countless others. He has also worked with rock bands like Spiritualized, Thee Oh Sees, and Psychic TV (appearing on their final record). As a curator, he currently runs Outlier, Queer Trash, & The Shape of Jizz to Cum.

REONA is an artist who uses tap dance techniques to express her music. She is also a tap dancer, improviser, designer, choreographer, teacher, and composer. Based in Tokyo, Japan. To materialize the sounds in her head, she uses tap shoes and a wooden board, as well as metal sheets, chains, steel bowls, plastic bags, and loudspeakers. Her sound is noise music–like, and she has performed with many improvisers, dancers, painters, and free jazz musicians. Her sound impulses are directly connected to her legs, and she expresses herself using everything available in her body, including her arms and mouth — making for a one-of-a-kind presence.
