LE FEU FOLLET 1963
(The Fire Within)
Directed by Louis Malle
108 minutes
In French with English subtitles

This masterpiece by Louis Malle is one of his very best films, yet it is rarely screened, and therefore seems to be largely forgotten in film history. Maybe the reason is that it's so intimate... too raw and unpretentious. A film that cuts too close to the bone. In any case it's long overdue for a proper screening, so...

After gathering international acclaim for such crowd-pleasers as The Lovers and Zazie dans le métro, Louis Malle gave his fans a shock with The Fire Within, a penetrating study of individual and social inertia. Maurice Ronet (star of Malle's earlier Elevator to the Gallows) gives an implosive, haunted performance as Alain Leroy, an ex-alcoholic who resolves to kill himself and spends the next twenty-four hours trying to reconnect with a host of wayward friends who he used to live and party with. Unsparing in its portrait of Alain's inner turmoil, and shot with remarkable lucidity, The Fire Within is one of Malle's darkest and most personal movies... a film about an incredibly deep loneliness.

But it is a very enchanting film, despite its edgy theme. Beautiful photography, interesting characters, absolutely superb acting, and shot during a hot Parisian summer... all set to the musical sound of Satie's Gymnopedies. Absolutely haunting.
