LA CRISE  1992
(The Crisis)
Directed by Coline Serreau
95 minutes

This is a film about our modern world, where things are beginning to crack and fall apart, not only from one side, but from many sides. How do we deal with it? This movie is a comedy, but one that is trying to speak about a world we are entering, and doing our best to deny.

One day Victor wakes up in the morning to an empty bed and finds a note from his wife saying that she's left him. Then he goes to his job in a legal department, and finds out he's been fired.  When he goes around trying to find help from his friends, they are all too busy with their own problems, and aren't much help. In other words, this is a movie about social breakdown, and how not only a few people are facing a crisis, but it's across the board. We are all caught up in a tidal wave of changes where everything is up in the air. But like I said above, even though this is a movie about rapidfire disasters, it isn't depressive - it's an absurd comedy.

Since our main character is no longer working and trying to find solutions to his life, this sends him on a journey. Director Coline Serreau (La Belle Verte) uses this set-up to explore all aspects of our society... from the pharmaceutical industry to racism, from junk food to the way the elderly and homeless are treated.

A poignant movie that's been forgotten... It's about time we pulled out again.
