DIVA
27 december 20:30 - 00:00
Once every month Huis De Pinto collaborates with a treasured Amsterdam film curator to transform our historic library into a cosy cinema for independent and experimental films. All films and the context in which they were made are thoroughly introduced which, in combination with the historical aesthetic of Huis De Pinto, allow the viewer to fully immerse themselves.
DIVA is the film that changed the look of French cinema, and that made opera music hip again by mixing it with black leather jackets, thugs, motorcycles, lush music, a twisting plot and gorgeous visuals. This is a modern film noir, set in Paris combining high art with low art to create an intoxicating suspense flick with a twist. Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue), it had a big influence on directors like Leos Carax (The lovers of pont-neuf), Jeunet and Kar-Wai Wong. This was a film that started a whole new way to look at cinema, and became the cult film of a generation.
Set in a stunning world where the fantastic and the real clash in contemporary Paris, DIVA is a thriller, fairy-tale, action flick and romantic drama all rolled into one movie. And beyond that it has a beautiful pop-art visual style, along with a legendary music soundtrack and opera singer Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez in her only film role. Pure cinematic dynamite.
