ANGEL FACE  1952
Directed by Otto Preminger
91 minutes

Austrian-Ukranian director Otto Preminger was one the many filmmakers who left Europe during WWll to work in exile in America. He came from a theatre background so when he started making films he had a knack for hard-hitting dramatic acting. In the 50's he became one of the principle creators of a genre that would later be called Film Noir.

This is a classic from that genre, and stars two dynamite actors - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons. It's a femme fatale story where the lead woman is stronger than the men, and it's about an ambulance-driver who meets a rich girl that he becomes fatally attracted to, and he goes right down the rabbit hole. Even as things go haywire he can't help himself. You have to remember after World War II  when men returned from the war, they saw women had run the country perfectly well without them, and they felt emasculated. Much of the 1950's was spent with men getting their jobs back and pushing women to become housewives again. So when you see a femme fatale in a movie like this, what you are actually seeing is men's fear that women are actually stronger.

The film has an incredible kick, takes some amazing twists and turns, and climaxes with an explosive finale. It's a haunting experience, fueled by two great performances. There is an aspect of 1950s 'male' cynicism at the core, but it gets blasted away by the wild storyline, the piercing cinematography, and the fantastic acting. What a trip!
